The Dirndl - Lore X Real Life

Guys - I’m from Bavaria, which is one of the two most southern regions in Germany. Our traditional clothes include the world famous Lederhosen and Dirndl. There are many different versions of these to be found all across my home country, but the most famous iterration is the one from my region in southern Bavaria all around Munich and towards the Alps.

The story goes, that the Dirndl got it’s fame from US soldiers stationed in Bavaria after WWII, where they saw it and appareantly travelled the world and told everybody “that’s what Germans wear”. If you for example look at what A-1 Pictures decided to throw Asuka and Kirito into when they visited a German convention for the release of the last Sword Art Online movie, you’ll know just how famous the so called “Tracht” is.

I am not a professor of history, nor do I know too much about clothes and styles. But since I am Bavarian with accent and all and since my favourite game just decided to release a version of a Dirndl to be worn in-Game, I thought it would be neat to give some background info on it. :)

Again: Since I’m most certainly not a professional, there might be others with different oppinions and more knowledge on this topic. But I am a Bavarian woman who regularly wears Dirndl. Nothing more and nothing less. 

ME RANTING ABOUT DIRNDL BENEATH THE CUT!

Usually a Dirndl is made up of one long dress (bodice and skirt together), with a detacheable apron and a white blouse beneath. Since the game has released the dress in pieces, I’ll start from top to bottom.

I am ignoring the hat because that is the only non-traditional part.

The Bodice

The bodice of the in-game dirndl is very accurate: you have the very low cut and even the different parts it’s made of. The gold embroydery is a nice element to have and not quite common right now, since simple dirndl are in style, but it is something you can have. In RL the golden triangles would be connected with a ribbon or a delicate chain, depending on the dirndl’s model and manufacturer - and current style.

The blouse is what keeps the boobs covered up (and what keeps them from falling out above the bodice). There are many different types of them: no sleeves, long sleeves, puffy sleeves or like - simply shirt sleeves. Currently, lace blouses which cover up the whole chest are the shit. The one used in the game is what you would wear to a folk festival - fun fact: The world famous “Oktoberfest” is nothing but a fair, a folk festival, with the difference being, that it’s being done by the city of Munich which has a lot more money than smaller villages. It started out as a celebration of the marriage of a Bavarian prince in 1810. 

I know games get a lot of flag for this, but the cleavage is actually very much accurate too: Women wear special dirndl bras to get the girls up and make them pop. Whoever designed this seems to have done their research because that is literally how 90% of my teenage and early 20s selfies look.

Concerning jewelry: the part between neck and boobies is a bit empty here because I have not yet found a fitting necklace. But depending on your preferences you could wear a fine choker, a thick “dirndl necklace” with many and big gems or a simple pearl necklace with perhaps a small heart shaped pendant.

The back of the bodice loooks good too - no complaints here! The lacing up is optional though in RL.

The Skirt

The skirt of a dirndl is usually attached to the bodice. There are some versions though for more mature women, where you can have a dettacheable one. It usually depends on a persons choice. The lenght can also vary from “Oktoberfest” short as in miniskirt to kneelength to full-lenght (meaning down to the ankles).

Depending on the type of cloth your dirndl is made of, you might have it exactly like the one here with embroidery on a simple colour or you might have it with checked patterns or flowers in white on a colourful background. The white rim is also accurate: In RL it would either be crepped or made of lace. It’s optional though. (But it’s not an underskirt - usually!)

The apron looks great here, but I don���t think I have ever seen this pattern on anything but pottery. ;) But it works with the skirt and that’s all that matters: A dirndl usually comes with an apron and when choosing one freely, you always pick one to match the dress - if the dress is simpley, you want your apron to be less so and the other way around.

My only problem would be the ribbon in red here. It’s usually not that thick and big - and this one looks more like someone tied a scarf around their hips. I’d say that’s artistic freedom. ;)

The Shoes

THESE SHOES ARE ACCURATE AS FUCK! Even with the socks (Germans are known for combining socks and sandals after all - yieks).

Traditionally, you’d wear exactly these made of black leather. Black, because in earlier days, shoes were quite expensive and black usually fit with most Sunday garments.

The socks come in in winter, when it’s cold. Women couldn’t just go around and by warmer shoes, so they knit themselves warm socks to match.

In General

I am VERY pleased with what they have done here! The dress is not perfect most certainly, but it is as accurate as it could be and for once I’m not even mad about the boobies, because that’s how they are supposed to look.

This does look like the dress of a young woman in her late teens, early twenties though. Older and/or married women tend to wear less colourful dirndls with more muted colours. The placement of the bow is also a political thing: Depending on where you live having it on one side might mean you are married and on the other that you are single - and no region can agree on which side is which. If you tie it in the middle or on your back though, you are most certainly the waitress.
